Progressive International provided yet another reason for Bitcoin as a means for avoiding the traditional finance system.
Progressive International, a global group that assists progressive left-wing campaigners and organizers, is exploring cryptocurrencies in reaction to being de-banked by leading payment and banking services.
On Monday, the organization revealed on Twitter that it is now accepting donations in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) to protect itself against efforts to keep them out of the global financial system.
Progressive International said that donations to the organization, and also their unity campaign with Cuba to support people be vaccinated against COVID-19, were banned by Dutch ING Bank and payment giant PayPal.ING and PayPal, according to the spokesman, were "acting in support of the United States embargo."
The vaccination campaign, which started last month, was intended to highlight the Cuban government's progress in producing COVID-19 vaccinations and to welcome a group of experts to address their work.
“Progressive International relies on small donations from the public to fund our work,” the spokesman said, adding:
“As a defence against attempts to shut us out of the international financial system, we are now also accepting donations in cryptocurrencies as well as fiat currencies. We are grateful for the donations we have received in cryptocurrencies.”
The spokesman went on to explain that this is the organization's first attempt accepting crypto donations. “We plan to continue to accept donations in crypto to support our work, not limited to Cuba, and may expand into other currencies where appropriate,” said the spokesman.
According to the spokesman, the organization will shortly modify its website to incorporate information about crypto donations.
Progressive International stated on Twitter that the BTC wallet address had received a total of 0.008 BTC ($307), whereas the ETH wallet address had received 0.715 ETH ($1,979).
