This weekend, a Phoenix couple married with their digital identities in the Metaverse's very first wedding.

The Arizona couple's wedding didn't go ahead as intended, indicating that the Metaverse has a long way to go before it can accurately organise a wedding with all the bells and whistles of the real world.

This weekend, a Phoenix couple married with their digital identities in the Metaverse's very first wedding.

On February 5, a wedding ceremony was held in Decentraland, with witnesses, Supreme Court Justice officiant Clint Bolick, and a digital audience of 2,000 guests.

Rose Law Group was hired by the wedding couple, Ryan and Candice Hurley, to officially register their marriage. Jordan Rose, the group's Founder and President, asserts it was the first wedding ever held on any blockchain-based Metaverse.

Rose Law Group's estate in Decentraland hosted the wedding ceremony. The legal team created a "meta-marriage framework" by including a "Virtual Premarital Agreement" that recognised the couple's digital identities and digital assets as they were recorded on the blockchain.

In the meantime, a "Meta-Marriage License" identified, stored, and tokenized the couple's virtual identities and site of marriage as an NFT on the blockchain. Rose elaborated:

“There currently is no legal framework for marriage in the Metaverse, so whether or not it will be legally binding is more a question of contract.”

“Unlike the real world, the metaverse isn’t limited by physical constraints that restrict your perfect wedding. Only in the Metaverse can your wildest, most imaginative dream wedding be a reality,” according to the Decentraland event description. Rose continued, saying:

“We see the future of the metaverse as being truly decentralized and existing almost completely on the blockchain, so the future of marriage in the metaverse will not need to have a record of their marriage in the real world.”

Even though the couple looked to envisage a wedding of the future, they were encountered with several rather archaic technical problems. The number of guests in attendees showed more for Decentraland, and the NFT presents for attendees were fastly claimed only about 20 minutes into the event.

Moreover, Ryan's avatar was left at the aisle when Candice's avatar was unable to show up digitally — but only for some guests. The bride was wearing a dress, a hoodie, or wasn't there at all, relying on which server attendees had been divided into.

After having trouble getting the ceremony to operate on Decentraland, one attendee directed guests to Rose Law Group's Instagram, in which the real-world couple was taking their vows through a Livestream.

Even after Rose's claims concerning the legitimacy of the wedding, it seems that several legal experts are still sceptical. As per the American Marriage Ministries, throughout a legal wedding ceremony, people must show up as their real-life personalities, not as their virtual counterparts.

Moreover, many states in the United States do not allow a couple to be married by an officiate virtually through video conference or if the couple is in different locations at the moment of the ceremony.

After connecting on the dating site Match.com, the Hurleys married in the "real world" 14 years ago.

Even though the wedding is unique in many ways, it is far from the only cause of a couple seeking to memorialize their wedding on the blockchain.

In April 2021, a California couple who work at the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase created an Ethereum smart contract to issue tokenized "rings" as NFTs during their wedding.

The first blockchain wedding was held in 2014 at the Disney World Bitcoin Conference, with the message "for better or worse, ’til death do us part because the blockchain is forever" recorded on-chain.
